From the Pre-Dawn and Iftar Table to Spiritual Delights: Women's Responsibilities

The blessed month of Ramadan is a month of Allah Almighty's special mercies, blessings, and forgiveness, in which faith is refreshed and hearts are given new life. This is the month at the beginning of which Allah Almighty addresses His servants and says:
﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ﴾
This verse makes it clear that the real purpose of fasting is not just to remain hungry and thirsty, but to attain piety. Ramadan is like an annual training system in a person's life, in which the reformation of the soul, intellect, and character are all intended. Since women are the foundation of the domestic system and the first teachers of generations, their role in Ramadan becomes extraordinarily important.

Allah Almighty has given Ramadan a special relationship with the Quran:
﴿شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ﴾
The month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for mankind.
This announcement clarifies the fact that the real message of Ramadan is guidance, understanding of religion, and connection with Allah. If women limit this month to just kitchen activities, they are deprived of this great message, but if they perform the arrangement of pre-dawn and iftar with the intention of worship and at the same time connect their hearts with the Quran, then these routines turn into spiritual delights. Along with the arrangement of kitchen work, the arrangement of the Quran should be the first priority. Women who are memorizers can recite the Quran even while working, and women who are not memorizers should keep the recitation on their phones and keep listening to it, and encourage children to read and listen as well.

*The Time of Pre-Dawn: Blessing, Awakening, and Seeking Forgiveness*
The time of pre-dawn is a time of Allah Almighty's special closeness and mercy. The Holy Prophet ﷺ described the importance of this time as follows:
“تَسَحَّرُوا فَإِنَّ فِي السُّحُورِ بَرَكَةً” Eat pre-dawn meal because there is blessing in pre-dawn meal.
The blessing in the pre-dawn meal is not only in the food but also hidden in the spiritual quality of that time. It is the responsibility of women that they do not make pre-dawn merely a formal act, but recognize the value of this time, wake up some time before the pre-dawn cooking and first perform some rak'ats of prayer, some recitation, and some remembrance, and then perform the tasks, wake up the family members gently and lovingly, and encourage them to bow down before Allah for a few moments as well.
The Holy Quran describes a special attribute of the believers as follows:
﴿وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ﴾ And they seek forgiveness from Allah at the time of pre-dawn.
Seeking forgiveness in the moments of pre-dawn softens the hardness of the heart and moistens the eyes. Despite domestic responsibilities, if a woman takes out a few moments for seeking forgiveness and prayer, then this act becomes the cause of blessing in her entire day.

The prescribed prayer for this time:
“اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ العَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي” O Allah, You are Forgiving, You love to forgive, so forgive me.
This prayer creates a sense of humility, hope, and closeness to the Lord in the heart of a believer, which is the real spirit of Ramadan.

*The Iftar Table: Gratitude, Prayer, and Moderation*
Iftar is the moment when a person completes a long period of patience on the command of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ described the greatness of this moment as follows:
“لِلصَّائِمِ عِندَ فِطْرِهِ دَعْوَةٌ لَا تُرَدُّ” For the fasting person, there is a prayer at the time of breaking the fast that is not rejected.”
This is a time of acceptance, but unfortunately, in most homes, this moment is wasted in noise, haste, and abundance of food. At this time, women have a double responsibility to arrange for Iftar and dinner along with their worship, in such a situation, women should arrange a timetable for the tasks, and create an atmosphere of prayer before Iftar, turn to Allah for a few moments with silence and attention, then this time can turn into spiritual bliss. On the one hand, there is the reward of cooking for the fasting people, and on the other hand, there is also the reward of praying at the time of Iftar.
Prescribed prayers for Iftar:
“اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ”
And
“ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ العُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ”
At the same time, this command of the Quran should always be kept in mind:
﴿وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ﴾ And do not waste, surely Allah does not like the wasteful.
Do not waste money on the pre-dawn and iftar table, simplicity, contentment, and gratitude are the qualities that turn the iftar table into worship, the table may be simple but the heart is full of gratitude, then it is more blessed.
And this is the real field of women's good management.

*The Atmosphere of the Home: Formation of a Place of Worship*
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while declaring domestic responsibilities as a trust, said:
“كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ”
A housewife is the soul of her home. Her prayer, her tone, her patience, and her priorities shape the mood of the entire house. In Ramadan, if she makes gentleness of character her motto along with worship, then this effect is unconsciously transferred to the hearts of children and family members.
Allah Almighty says:
Save yourselves and your families from a fire.
This verse reminds women that their responsibility is not only physical upbringing but also spiritual protection.

*The Place of Intention, Patience, and Service*
The real spirit of Ramadan is hidden in the purity of intention. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
“إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ” All actions depend on intentions.
If a woman keeps the pleasure of Allah in mind while cooking, cleaning, or serving her family members or in other domestic affairs, then these actions become high-level worship for her. Patience, tolerance, and silent service make a woman's role in Ramadan more dignified.

 *Prayer, Repentance, and Spiritual Delights*
Ramadan brings a promise of forgiveness. The Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
“مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِن ذَنبِهِ”
Whoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and in the hope of reward, his past sins are forgiven.
This month is a special opportunity for every believer to pray for himself, his children, and the entire Ummah. Women should especially pray for their children and husbands.
Quranic Prayer:
“رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ”“Our Lord! Grant us from our spouses and offspring the joy of our eyes, and make us leaders for the righteous.”
Keep reciting this prayer after every prayer as well,
These prayers soften the heart and make life meaningful, and this is the spiritual delight that is far beyond the apparent system of pre-dawn and iftar.

Thus, the month of Ramadan is not only a month for women to decorate the table but also a season to adorn the hearts. If the pre-dawn is adorned with recitation and remembrance, the iftar with prayer, the day with patience, and the night with worship, then even an ordinary house can become a center of the light of faith. This is the message of Ramadan, and this is the silent but great responsibility of women.
May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to understand the reality of Ramadan, value its times, and fulfill our responsibilities with sincerity. Amen.
